Creative Awakening Protocol — awaken your mind, regulate your nervous system, transform your life.
Neuroscience · Attachment Science · Developmental Trauma

You have understood your pattern for years.
Understanding it has not changed it.

The 21-Day System

That is not a failure of effort or intelligence. The pattern does not live in your thoughts. It lives lower down, in a nervous system that learned how to keep you safe long before you had words for what was happening. Thinking about it reaches your thinking. This reaches the place it actually lives.

The Problem

You keep doing the thing
you decided not to do.

You have had the realisation. Possibly many times. You understood the pattern — in therapy, in journaling, in a moment of clarity at 2am. And then you woke up the next morning and did the same thing again.

That is not a willpower problem. It is a neurobiology problem.

"The pattern does not live in your thoughts. It lives in your body — in the nervous system that learned how to survive before you had any say in the matter."

Most of what you do in a day never passes through deliberate thought at all. Kahneman called it System 1: fast, automatic, effortless, and far older than reasoning. It is not consulting your intentions. It is running a programme that was written when the only job was to get you through.

To change that programme you have to reach it where it is stored. This protocol does that. Every day, for twenty-one days.

A lit stone path climbing across open moorland at dusk
Twenty-one days. One page at a time.
What Is It

A nervous system system.
In four parts.

You start with Part 1 and you do Day 1 today. Everything else exists to support that.

Part 1

Start Here

One page a day for twenty-one days. Read it, do the practice, breathe, write. Every day card carries the science in one clear sentence at the foot of the page.

Part 2

The Protocol

Every day again in fuller form — the practice described more slowly, the reflection opened out. For when you want depth, or want to read tomorrow the evening before.

Part 3

The Library

Twenty-four modules on the science underneath: the nervous system, developmental trauma, attachment, ADHD, shame, boundaries, the inner child — plus five bonus modules.

Part 4

The Identity Reset

A ten-step ritual for releasing the belief that keeps you small. Built on memory reconsolidation — and on the research that explains why visualisation alone fails.

A luminous tree of golden neural filaments with roots spreading below
What is inherited is a sensitivity — not a sentence.
The Science

Six bodies of research,
and where each one ends.

Every practice in the system is traced to its source, and every source is named so you can go and read it yourself.

Neuroscience

Porges on the three states of the autonomic nervous system. Barrett and Friston on the predictive brain. Neuroplasticity, and what it actually requires.

Attachment Science

Bowlby, Ainsworth, Main. The four attachment patterns and how they quietly run every relationship that matters to you.

Developmental Trauma

Bessel van der Kolk on how the body holds what the mind could not process. Maté on adaptation. Levine on the unfinished stress cycle.

Epigenetics & Sensitivity

Meaney and Yehuda on how early experience changes gene expression. Boyce and Ellis on why the same sensitivity that breaks under stress thrives under care.

Memory Reconsolidation

Nader, LeDoux and Ecker on what actually dissolves an emotional learning, rather than merely managing it. This is the engine of Part 4.

Consciousness Research

EEG-documented altered states and the US Army's declassified 1983 Gateway report — presented as context, with the neuroscience doing the load-bearing work.

Why This One

It tells you where the ground
is solid — and where it is not.

The ADHD module does not overclaim

It dismantles genetic determinism properly — but it does not tell you ADHD is purely environmental, because that claim does not survive contact with the research. It makes the stronger and more defensible case: what is inherited is a sensitivity, not a disorder. And a sensitivity responds to what you do next.

Part 4 includes the study most manifestation material leaves out

Gabriele Oettingen found that positive visualisation, on its own, measurably reduces your chances of achieving what you want. Your brain reads the imagined outcome as partly obtained and quietly withdraws the energy. That finding is not hidden here — it is the reason the ritual in Part 4 is built the way it is.

Preliminary is labelled preliminary

You are told what is established, what is promising, and what is speculation. Where a claim rests on small samples or on work that has not been independently replicated, it says so plainly — and gives you the reference anyway, so you can decide for yourself.

The Structure

Three weeks.
Three jobs.

Week 1 · Days 1–7
Just look.

Do not fix anything. See the pattern clearly — where it lives in your body, what it has been protecting you from, what it has cost. Most people have never looked without immediately trying to fix. This week you only look. That alone changes something.

Week 2 · Days 8–14
Let the body finish.

The pattern is held as tension, incomplete emotion, and stress cycles that never closed. This week you let them close. It is the most uncomfortable week. That is not a problem — it is exactly what is supposed to happen.

Week 3 · Days 15–21
Choose differently.

Not perfectly — consistently. Each time you choose a new response you build the pathway that makes the next choice easier. Twenty-one days does not rewire a life. What it gives you is first-hand proof that rewiring is real, and that changes your relationship with every pattern you carry.

Every Single Day

Four things.
20–40 minutes.

Every day card has the same structure. You always know what you are doing and why.

Read

The Context

The minimum you need to understand today's practice. Two or three sentences. Not a lecture.

5 min
Do

The Practice

A body scan, somatic release, written exercise, or meditation. The actual work.

10–20 min
Breathe

The Reset

A specific breathing technique for today. Breath is the fastest direct route to the nervous system.

3–5 min
Write

The Integration

One question. Written, not thought. Writing makes the invisible pattern visible in a way thinking never does.

5–10 min
Ten stone steps rising towards a warm light
Ten steps. One belief.
Part Four · New

The Identity Reset.

There is usually one belief underneath the pattern. Not a thought you can argue with — a conclusion your body reached a long time ago and has been quietly defending ever since. Part 4 is a ten-step ritual for changing that one belief.

It is grounded in memory reconsolidation: the finding that an emotional learning becomes briefly editable when it is reactivated, and that a contradiction felt in the body during that window can dissolve it rather than merely counterbalance it. Six foundations, ten steps, and a journal page for each.

01

The predictive brain

Why your nervous system spends its day predicting rather than perceiving — and why a belief is a prediction that stopped being checked.

02

The editable window

Nader, LeDoux and Ecker: what actually has to happen for an old learning to change instead of simply being sat on.

03

Practice without movement

Pascual-Leone's pianists, Ranganathan's strength study, and the honest limits of what mental rehearsal can and cannot do.

04

Why visualising alone backfires

Oettingen's research, in full, including the part that makes it inconvenient — and what has to be added for it to work.

Sixty-plus researchers.
Seventy-one cited sources.

Named, dated, and listed at the back so you can check any of it.

The Truth

This pattern kept you safe.
It also cost you years.

You did not choose it. It was the best available response to an environment you could not change. Understanding that is not weakness — it is precision. And precision is where change actually starts.

Honestly

Who this is not for.

There is no version of this that works for everybody, and pretending otherwise would be the first broken promise.

If you want a quick fix, this will frustrate you. It asks for twenty-one days of small daily practice, and the practice is deliberately unglamorous.

If you are in acute crisis, this is not the right tool right now. Support from a person is worth more than any book, and this will still be here afterwards.

If you want the universe to rearrange itself around your intentions, this will disappoint you — deliberately. Part 4 is built on the research that explains why that approach underperforms.

Questions

Do I need prior experience with meditation or therapy?
No. Everything is explained from first principles and designed to work with your nervous system exactly as it is today.
How much time does it take each day?
Twenty to forty minutes. The exact time is printed on each day card, and some days are shorter.
What if I miss a day?
Carry on from where you are rather than starting over. Missing a day is not a problem. Jumping ahead is — the sequence is doing real work.
Is this therapy?
No. It is educational material grounded in research, and it is not a substitute for professional care or diagnosis. It works alongside therapy and medication rather than instead of them.
Is Part 4 manifestation?
It covers the same ground, from the opposite direction. It is built on memory reconsolidation and on Oettingen's finding that visualisation alone reduces achievement. If you are looking for a system that promises the universe will respond to your intentions, this is not it.
What does the ADHD module actually argue?
That the heritability figures are real but widely misread, that the equal-environments assumption behind twin studies is weaker than it looks, and that what is inherited is a sensitivity rather than a disorder. It does not claim ADHD is purely environmental, and it says so explicitly.
What is the Gateway Process — is this "woo-woo"?
It refers to a US Army-commissioned research programme from 1983, declassified in 2003, which investigated altered brainwave states. The module presents it as historical context. Nothing in the system depends on it — the neuroscience carries the weight on its own.
What format is the file?
A 219-page illustrated PDF formatted for A4. Readable on any device, print-friendly, yours permanently including future revisions.
Who Wrote This

The work that freed me,
written down.

My name is Jake Lighthead. For most of my life I was attached. Attached to being understood. Attached to people who were never going to stay. Attached to a version of the future where everything had finally resolved and I would be allowed to relax.

I read the books. I could describe my own patterns in detail, name their origin, trace their logic — and not one of those patterns moved. Understanding turned out to be a way of staying in exactly the same place with better vocabulary.

What changed was not another insight. It was practice — small, daily, unglamorous, physical, repeatable — aimed at the place the pattern actually lives. Three weeks of that did more than years of thinking about it ever did.

Everything on this page is that practice, written down. Every page was tested on me first, and none of it promises a transformation it cannot deliver.
